A frightful story of a 6 foot wooden rafter that pierced through the stomach of a person working in a sawmill workshop has been reported the other day from Mawanella. Due to the competency and the cleverness of the doctors in the Mawanella hospital, the life of this patient was saved as they could successfully remove the rafter without causing any harm  and damage to the patient’s internal organs.

Dissanayake is the name of the person who had been working in a saw mill in Hemmathagama for over 7 years now is a 53 year old competant carpenter. He has been sawing wood from the sawing machine with the help of an apprentice and a wooden rafter has escaped their hands and had net wit this almost fatal accident and dreadful incident..
Without knowing what the people could do in such a dreadful situation , they had very appropriately called the hospital authorities while this person was clamoring in pain holding the wooden rafter which has pierced through his stomach.
Dr K.M Gamage, one of the Medical officers has sent an ambulance after listening to the story of the patient and he had given instructions to bring the patient as soon as possible to Mawanella hospital without letting the rafter to move from the position ir was in,.
When Surgeon Nishantha Wijenayake had heard the news of this patient he has arranged the ICU of the Mawanella hospital.
However, when they have seen the patient they have realized that it is difficult to take the patient inside because of the 6 foot rafter. They have taken immediate actions to give basic treatments to the patient who is fighting between life and death outside the ward while taking blood samples. Then they have brought the saw machine to cut the rafter after which the patient had been admitted to the ward.
Surgeon Nishantha Wijenayake had done the surgery successfully with the help and able assistance of Dr. Kosala Gunasekara, the Anesthetic surgeon Dr. Indunil, Anesthelogist Dr Ashoka, and the nurses and the other related medical staff.
The saw mill worker Dissanayake had recovered fully after the surgery. He owes a tremendous amount of gratitude to the gods above and particularly to the doctors who saved his life by operating on him
After this successful surgery, Dr. Nishantha Wijenayake Halpegamage stated that after such a dreadful accident the patients should be hospitalized without removing the stake because human beings have only about 5 liters of blood and a person could succumb to death die due to loss of blood. Therefore precautions should be taken to avoid excessive bleeding.
